OTHER: This Teasel is popular for its unique look & beautiful flowers, its value to wildlife, & dried for arrangements.

Teasel plants have prickly leaves, & large elongated thistle-type flower heads that contain hundreds of tiny blooms. The flower heads measure 2 – 4” long by 1 ½ - 2” across, & begin to bloom in the middle, working their way outwards. The flowers are pollinated by bees, attract butterflies, & birds love to eat their seeds in the fall. As is implied by the scientific name ‘Dipsacus’, these plants catch water at their leaf bases which is utilized by insects to drink, but this also prevents sap-sucking insects from being able to climb up the plant & harm it.

Teasels are able to grow in soil that is loose & sandy, or in heavy clays. They enjoy full sun, & are drought tolerant & maintenance free. In most settings they are best placed near the back of the garden as they can reach heights of 6’ tall.

The teasel makes a great long lasting fresh cut flower, but as was mentioned, they are most popular in dried floral arrangements. Simply clip the heads off & hang them upside down to dry, or allow them to dry on the plants before removing them. The dried heads are also used in other craft projects like making adorable little hedgehogs ‘n stuff :)

Fuller’s Teasel is a subspecies of the common teasel, supposedly grown by “fullers” in the wool industry giving it its common name. The spines on heads were used to card wool, although there is some debate as to which species was actually used for this purpose. A dye is also obtained from the plant, which is still used today. There are also traditional medicinal uses for this nifty selection.
