The leaves manage to be both tart & spicy while maintaining a crisp yet juicy sweetness. Red Romaine’s long, crunchy, spoon-shaped leaves grow upright and bunch as they mature. They start out green and transform to lovely bronze to deep maroon shades flecked with green & have some white veining. They make a stunning addition to gardens and salads alike because of these vibrant colors. This lettuce will produce the best flavors & colors when grown in cooler weather, and it is very cold hardy. It is, however, also very heat tolerant and slow to bolt, so can be enjoyed in all climates. Red Romaine Lettuce is very popular in Caesar salads, mixed salads, & as a garnish. This open pollinated heirloom variety lettuce is a Mediterranean native that dates all the way back to 55 BC! You just can’t mess with perfection!
