Enjoy flavorful onions from spring through winter with this Short Day Onion Seed Collection from Survival Garden Seeds. Designed for growers in Zone 6 and warmer—especially Southern gardens—this set includes Red Burgundy, White Grano, and Tokyo Long White Bunching onions. These heirloom varieties offer a balanced mix of color, texture, and culinary versatility, providing steady harvest potential across the growing season.

Versatile Collection for Southern Climates:
Start seeds indoors in fall or spring, then transplant outdoors to enjoy sweet, mild, and aromatic onions throughout summer. These varieties thrive in full sun and grow well in raised beds, garden rows, or containers. With sufficient light, they can also be grown indoors. This collection includes short day and intermediate day types that begin forming bulbs when daylight reaches 10–12 hours, making them ideal for warm-region gardeners.

Three Short Day Cultivars:

  • Red Burgundy (pkg. wt. 500MG) is a short day variety producing glossy 4-inch red bulbs with white flesh and pink rings. Excellent for slicing, fresh eating, and pickling.
  • White Grano (pkg. wt. 500MG) is a mild white onion with a versatile flavor suited for raw dishes and cooked recipes. Bulbs can be stored briefly or frozen for long-term use.
  • Tokyo Long White Bunching Onion (pkg. wt. 500MG) forms slender green stalks instead of round bulbs. Ideal for cut-and-come-again harvesting and well suited to pots both indoors and out.

Why Customers Love the Short Day Onion Seed Collection:

  • Tailored for Southern growers and warm-season climates
  • Provides a range of onion types for slicing, cooking, garnishing, and preserving
  • Reliable heirloom cultivars with consistent flavor and performance
  • Suitable for containers, raised beds, and small-space gardening
  • Offers harvest options from full-size bulbs to tender green onion tops

How to Grow:
Begin seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before planting out. Transplant seedlings into full sun once soil is workable. Space bulb-forming onions to allow for proper sizing, and plant bunching onions more closely for frequent harvesting. Keep soil evenly moist and weed-free. Short day onions will bulb once daylight increases in spring.

Harvest & Use:
Harvest Red Burgundy and White Grano bulbs when tops begin to fall over, then allow them to cure before storing. Use for slicing, sautéing, pickling, or freezing. Tokyo Long White can be harvested repeatedly for fresh green tops that brighten soups, stir-fries, and salads.
